New York State has pushed back the opening of applications for its Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) a critical lifeline for residents struggling to afford heating and fuel during the winter months.
$287M PROGRAM STALLED OVER FUNDING GAP
HEAP — a program valued at more than 287 million dollars and which provided support to over 1.5 million households last year with an average relief of $996 per family cannot begin this season due to lack of available funding.
NO FEDERAL BUDGET, NO FUNDS
According to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, the delay stems from the absence of a finalized federal budget or even a short-term continuing resolution. Without federal allocations, the state is unable to disburse benefits or begin accepting new applications.
LOW-INCOME FAMILIES AT RISK AS TEMPERATURES DROP
Officials warn that the halt could leave thousands of vulnerable and low-income families exposed to mounting heating costs just as colder weather arrives raising concerns about energy insecurity and household safety heading into the winter season.
