In the aftermath of recent natural disasters, finding safe and reliable housing has become a major concern for residents, particularly within the South Asian community, which has been disproportionately affected. Families and individuals have faced severe displacement, property damage, and financial challenges. Federal and local agencies are providing resources to help secure temporary housing and access financial assistance.

Finding Emergency Shelters
Residents in presidentially declared disaster areas can access a variety of shelter options:

  • FEMA Shelters: Displaced individuals can locate open FEMA shelters by texting SHELTER followed by their ZIP code to 43362, using the free FEMA mobile app, or searching online for nearby disaster recovery centers.
  • Transitional Hotel Sheltering: Registered FEMA disaster assistance applicants may qualify for the Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program, which covers hotel stays while displaced. Residents can use their FEMA registration number to find participating hotels and reserve rooms.
  • Red Cross Shelters: The American Red Cross provides emergency shelters for those forced to evacuate. Residents can locate nearby shelters via the Red Cross online map.
  • Local Assistance: Dialing 211 connects residents to local social services and emergency housing resources across most U.S. regions.

Financial Assistance for Housing
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs (LIHEAPs) may provide funding to help residents secure shelter after a natural disaster. Eligibility and criteria vary by state and tribal area. Affected individuals are encouraged to contact their local LIHEAP office for more information.

Impact on the South Asian Community
The South Asian community has been among the hardest hit by recent flooding and natural disasters. Many households have experienced complete displacement, damage to property, and loss of livelihoods. Community organizations are working alongside federal and local agencies to provide culturally sensitive support, including temporary housing, food assistance, and financial aid.

Stay Informed and Safe
Residents are urged to stay aware of local advisories, register for disaster assistance promptly, and utilize the resources available to ensure safety and shelter during emergency situations.
