An Indian-origin couple from Plano, Texas — Sidhartha “Sammy” Mukherjee and his wife Sunita Mukherjee — have been charged in connection with a multi-million dollar real estate fraud scheme that reportedly defrauded over 100 people, most of them from the Indian-American community.
The case began unfolding in 2024 when a complaint was filed by a couple who claimed to have lost $325,000. This triggered a local investigation that was later transferred to the FBI. Authorities now estimate the scam’s total value to exceed $4 million (approximately Rs.33 crore).

According to investigators, Sammy and Sunita posed as developers of a lucrative real estate project, luring victims with promises of high returns and providing forged documents, including remodeling contracts and invoices. They falsely used the name of the Dallas Housing Authority — a legitimate government body — on these documents, which gave the scheme a false sense of credibility.

The couple, once considered respected members of the Indian-American community, lived a lavish lifestyle that masked their criminal activities. Alarm bells rang when the profit cheques issued by the couple began bouncing, revealing that they had no financial backing.
So far, 20 victims have officially come forward, but authorities believe the number of those affected could surpass 100. The FBI’s investigation revealed that Sammy Mukherjee orchestrated the scam using multiple layers of deceit, making it difficult for victims to detect the fraud early on.
In addition to the real estate fraud, the couple faces further charges, including sending threatening emails to elderly individuals, coercing them into making urgent investments by falsely warning them of potential arrest. They also allegedly exploited the federal Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic by submitting fake employee and payroll information to claim benefits.

The couple filed for bankruptcy in 2024, and they are currently being held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. Their immigration status is under review, and investigators are also probing whether the defrauded money was funneled into cryptocurrency accounts.

Reports also indicate that Sammy Mukherjee may have a prior fraud record in Mumbai, and authorities are coordinating with international agencies to further investigate his background.
This case has sent shockwaves through the Indian-American community, where the couple was once admired, and now serves as a warning about financial scams disguised in familiar faces.
